Mortal Kombat 2: Karl Urban Entered the Tournament — and Earthrealm Never Needed a B-Actor So Badly

There’s a very specific charm in casting Karl Urban — the same actor who played Bones in Star Trek, Billy Butcher in The Boys, and Judge Dredd — as Johnny Cage: a washed-up 90s action star drafted to save the world in a supernatural fighting tournament.

Mortal Kombat 2 hit theaters in May 2026 with an 18+ rating, which already says a lot about the sequel’s intentions. The first film (2021) was a solid but restrained attempt. This second one goes deep into the mythology: the 10th tournament is on the line, Quan Chi resurrects Kung Lao and Kano, and Earthrealm needs five champions. The fifth on the list is Johnny Cage.

The irony is the character’s heart. Cage is a washed-up actor turned punchline — but inside the tournament, his mysterious powers start to emerge. Karl Urban got it. He trained for 3 to 4 months in martial arts and physically delivered a Johnny who balances humor and menace in a way these films rarely pull off.

The rest of the cast returns: Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Tadanobu Asano as Raiden. The additions of Adeline Rudolph (Kitana) and Tati Gabrielle (Jade) bring real weight to the MK mythology’s female figures.

The production got it right by keeping the tone serious. Mortal Kombat 2 doesn’t wink at the camera — it delivers the game’s universe as genuinely adult, with fatalities that don’t apologize and a story that finally justifies the tournament’s scale.

For anyone who played the classics: this is the film the franchise owed us.
